Leeds Castle, Canterbury and Dover Castle
DescriptionThis tour is approximately 10-12 hours.
Your personal chauffeur will meet you in the lobby of your hotel at 8:00 am. This is a good time to discuss the day’s itinerary and make any changes if you need to.
Set on a lake in picturesque grounds Leeds Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in England. During its 1000 year history Leeds Castle has been a Norman stronghold, the private property of six of England’s medieval queens, a palace used by Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon, a Jacobean country house, a Georgian mansion, an elegant early 20th century retreat for the influential and famous, and in the 21st century, it has become one of the most visited historic buildings in Britain.
Your chauffeur will then take you to the town of Canterbury where you can visit Canterbury Cathedral, one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England. The current building dates back to 1070 and forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Community. While here you can visit the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral in 1170.
On route to Dover why not stop for a short walk around one of Kent’s most picturesque villages that seems to have been lost in time. Once here it will be quite obvious why they use this village as a setting for films set in the past.
Founded in the 11th century Dover Castle, the largest in England, has been described as the key to England due to its elevated defensive position looking out over the white cliffs of Dover. There is evidence that this defensive position has been continuously used since the Iron Age. The Romans left their mark here when they invaded in 43AD and built a lighthouse, the Normans built a church and in more recent times it has had tunnels built into the cliff for use during the Second World War. Tour the castle at your own pace before heading back to your hotel.
